Careful!

Saturday I was toodling along on a lovely sunny day and I crossed the street - legally - when a truck rolled a red light and hit me.

My quite nice bike had to be replaced. If I had been more defensive, I would have waited for the truck to come to a complete stop.

Be careful when you cross the street! Cars just crumple your bike!

Oh no, I didn't know you had to replace your bike! That's so horrible. I hope the truck driver was the one to replace it, and not you.

As he damn well should be, having gone through a red light!

Glad you're OK, and sorry to hear about your bike.

Oh no! I'm glad you're all right, but I'm so sorry about your bike. :(

Oh, I'm so glad you're okay--and that you seem to have reached an amicable arrangement with the driver.

Your experience is a great reminder, though. I'm a fairly defensive rider, but I don't think it's even possible to be TOO defensive. No matter how wrong or illegal the actions of the driver of a heavy vehicle, the consequences will always be to the cyclist. There's the law of the land, and then there's the laws of physics.

Thanks for telling your story. I hope you'll post pictures of your new bike--you kind of earned it the hard way. Again, I'm so glad you weren't injured.
