bicyclesIt's been quiet around here lately, so I thought my fellow bike-riding enthusiasts might enjoy seeing the beautiful red Indonesian pedi-cab I encountered yesterday on the streets of Portland.
It's not in operation as a cab, though the owner, a young dad in the neighborhood, was giving his son and their puppy a ride to a neighborhood event. He said he'd bought it locally.
Besides the wonderful decorations on front panels and the metal rear fender, and the polished wooden cab seating area with its brass-tacked, ribbed hood, the pedicab featured a single gear and rod brakes operable by a lever in the knee vicinity of the rider.
The owner said he'd tried an enclosed hub gearing system on it, but that it overheated, so he'd switched back to a single gear. You'd need to be pretty strong to pedal this baby up any sort of incline with two adult passengers in it!
You can see the rod brake arrangement dipping below the saddle and extending to the rear wheel. The current owner has replaced all three wheels (and, it looks like, the pedal and chain assembly), but the whole body and frame appear to be original. Pretty cool, huh?
