I am very excited to see the comm growing and people who're not me posting (hooray!) However, this has made me think that perhaps it's time to revisit our profile statement about community purpose and goals, which has been three very short sentences long for the last few months.

The following is my current re-draft of the statement; if you have thoughts, please holler.

This is a comm for cycling-related discussions -- rides, routes, advocacy, squee, equipment, technology, whatever. Although the name is "bicycles," we welcome conversation about any kind of human-powered wheeled-and-geared transport.

Your friendly moderator reserves the right to moderate in my basically-reasonable way. YFM is not necessarily watching all threads at all times, so please PM if there's a situation happening which you think would be improved by my intervention.

Please feel free to make an introductory post telling us about yourself, your bike(s), and where and how you use them! And tagging your posts is a good thing to do.

Wheeeeee!

I've been wanting to bike for about the last two weeks, but for the first week I never got my act together and for the next week it was rainy. Today it was sunny, I had a free afternoon, and I had a nearby errand to run. So I pumped up my hybrid's tires a little bit using my old squeaky & inefficient footpump, biked to one of my LBSs where I used one of their pumps to air up my tires the rest of the way (and bought a stand pump I've been eyeing, because I discovered it cost a lot less than I thought it did), and then continued on to my local yarn shop to pick up the umbrella I'd left there on Thursday. It's wonderful weather out--it's been in the 40s F lately, which would be warm enough for a ride, but today it jumped up to 62°! And I was happy to be on my bike.

I reaccustomed myself to my bike seat faster than I expected. Now all that remains is to build my leg strength back up--today's ride was only about 3 miles and I could definitely tell I haven't been riding for a while!

I biked a lot twenty years ago when I was in college and was very in shape. Am trying to rediscover it now, mostly with kid friendly recreation. My husband is an avid mountain biker, way more in shape and way more of a daredevil than I, but even given the widely differing capacities of the four of us, we do enjoy biking together on easy trails.

Alas, we can't bike to work (I have a 20-mile commute, he has a 35-mile commute) but I'm trying to make more time for biking and I love hearing about it and thinking about it.

I've done road riding and trail riding, but nothing scary or technical. And I'm very out of shape, but biking is something I've always loved and have many happy memories built around.

Right now I have an old rebuilt Proflex that is so easy to ride. The kids have decent bikes too. Hubby has both a road bike and a mountain bike.

so, hi!
